Balancing Act

A very interesting Northern Hawk Owl chose to land on a cattail instead of nearby branches and spent about a minute trying to stay balanced.

It looks like the arctic, but it's only 20 minutes away from my house. You can thank the lake effect snow bands and strong winds for providing an environment that the snowy owls love.

Barred Owl at Sunset

After unsuccessfully hiking the trails for two hours trying to find a Barred Owl (among other animals), this one decided to perch on the best possible spot (sunlight hitting the tree, no branch obstructions) for about 10 seconds before taking off into the forest again as I was just about in front of my car. Go figure.

Dark Eyed Junco

Half an inch of ice from the latest Ontario ice storm wasn't nearly enough to faze the Dark Eyed Juncos, nor the Cardinals. It was as if the storm never happened. Humans? Yeah, we were shut down for a day.
